Oasis – The Story Behind '(What's the Story) Morning Glory?'
Share
Released in October 1995, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? didn't just top the charts — it became the soundtrack of a generation. Oasis's second studio album sold over 22 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums in UK history. But what's the story behind the story?
From Burnage to Britpop Royalty
Brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher grew up in Burnage, Manchester, a working-class suburb that shaped their raw, unfiltered sound. By the time they recorded Morning Glory at Rockfield Studio in Wales, Oasis had already caused a stir with Definitely Maybe (1994). But this album was different — bigger, bolder, and built for stadiums.
The Songs That Defined a Decade
From the opening chords of Hello to the anthemic closer Champagne Supernova, Morning Glory is a masterclass in Britpop songwriting. Wonderwall became one of the most-played songs in radio history, while Don't Look Back in Anger — sung by Noel rather than Liam — gave the album its emotional centrepiece. Some Might Say was the band's first UK number-one single.
The Album Cover
Shot by Michael Spencer Jones on Berwick Street in London's Soho, the iconic cover features two figures walking past each other — a visual metaphor for ships passing in the night. The street itself became a pilgrimage site for Oasis fans worldwide.
Why Fans Still Wear It
Thirty years on, the Morning Glory logo remains one of the most recognisable in rock history. Wearing an Oasis shirt isn't just fashion — it's a statement of belonging to something that mattered. Whether you were there in '95 or discovered them through a playlist, the connection is real.
